DAY ONE - 26.3.2012

Course excerpts - Day One
The 12 NICC students were welcomed by Avy.
Sonia Manchanda then gave a short introduction to the Dream:In Project.
The students filled in cards, creating their, first minimal biosketches.
Then they extended the print biosketches to videosketches in which each student introduced themselves and why they chose design and what they want to do with design. Each student also articulated their aspirations on video.
Sonia Manchanda then took them through the history of Idiom as India's leading design firm and its emergence as a design strategy house. She recounted how Carlos Teixeira's from Parsons, The New School of Design, came into India doing research into design strategy in emerging nations and how it led him to Idiom.
Design 1.0 is form.
Design 2.0 is creating systems.
Design 3.0 is creating meaning.
Carlos and Idiom then did a 4 day workshop and there was a nagging question. The Western way of thinking is design as problem solving but what other way is possible? At Idiom, design is seen as creating opportunities, positive not negative. The idea of looking at humans and their needs is superficial. So too an ethnography that treats people as bug under a microscope.
Systems sometimes cannot or do not recognise capabilities. But what about the dreams of people whose capabilities are not recognised?
Now, society has begun talking about dreams here and there. Yet, people are boxed into the pyramid - India 1, India 2 and India 3. India 3 is the bottom of the pyramid.
We made a film and began questioning and formulating a project. What if we went out to find out what people are dreaming about - head in the clouds but feet on the street. This goes beyond virtual networks.
Facebook - you connect with people you know. But, here in Dream:In you go out and connect with people you don’t know. You develop empathy and develop a system that goes deep into people's psyche.
By Jan-Feb 2011 it became a project we called Dream:In. We did the Dream:In Journey and Conclave. Now we want to create a portal where a billion dreams can be uploaded.
